Fish Oil Pills
If you are currently
experiencing certain health problems, your doctor or physician may ask you to consider taking fish oil pills. Additionally, because there are many health benefits of fish oil that may prevent future
concerns, it may be recommended that they be incorporated into your diet even if you are otherwise currently
healthy. However, because fish oil tablets are dietary supplements, they
are not regulated as strictly as drugs are. As a result, it is important to
note that the quality of fish oil concentrate may vary greatly from brand to
brand.
The most important of
fish oil supplements arise
primarily from the omega 3 content found therein. Consumers must realize
that different species of fish are higher in omega 3's than others. The
omega 3 levels found in fish also vary from season to season. Accordingly,
it is important to know the content level found in the fish oil pills chosen to incorporate in the
diet.
Therefore, the label found on
the fish oil bottle should be one of the first places the consumer investigates when buying fish oil
pills. Ideally, the label will include the minimum omega 3 content
present. A label that indicates the average or maximum omega 3 level is
less helpful.
Other important details one
would typically like to see on the label of a fish oil product are, in addition to the total omega 3 fatty
acids, the minimum amount of DPA, EPA, and DHA, as well as the species of fish that the pills are made
from.
The species of fish is
important because research has shown that certain types of fish contain high levels of mercury, dioxins, and
other contaminants. Obviously, those that have higher contaminants should
not be eaten at all. Others are safe to eat multiple times per week. This
same process should be considered when choosing a fish oil supplement.
Additionally, there are other
chemicals that raise health concerns when considering taking fish oil tablets. For example, PCB's, despite being banned in the 1970's are still found in the environment
because they are not biodegradable. These human carcinogens should be
avoided at all costs. It is important to realize that fish oil pills will
likely contain some level of this chemical. Accordingly, consumers buying
fish oil pills must investigate the PCB levels found in their chosen supplements. Generally speaking, the Council For Responsible Nutrition ("CRN") opine that anything more
than ninety parts per one billion is too high. On the other hand, the
International Fish Oil Standards ("IFOS") believe that forty-five parts per one billion is a more acceptable
number. Those fish oil supplement companies adhering to either the CRN or
IFOS standards will usually proudly display that information on the product
label.
