Health Benefits of Fish Oil
The health benefits of fish oil are now widely accepted by
physicians and researchers alike. However, this was not always the
case. It was not until the early 1970's when researchers made the
then-shocking realization that even though the diet of the Greenland Eskimos was exceptionally high in fat, they
had very low incidences of heart disease and arthritis. Further
investigations led to the discovery that these Eskimos consumed large quantities of two oils known as
eicosapentaenoic acid ("EPA") and docosahexaenoic acid ("DHA"). Luckily
for everyone, the research continued and the health benefits of fish oil are now known to include preventing heart
attacks, certain cancer, depression and atherosclerosis, as well as supplementing treatments for disabetes,
ulcerative colitis, Raynaud's disease and rheumatoid arthritis.
Often used preventatively for
lowering cholesterol, fish oil supplements have also been linked to the reversal of many diseases and conditions
including, but not limited to, angina, heart disease (including heart attacks and congestive heart failure),
arrhythmias and stroke. These health benefits of fish oil are commonly
believed to be the result of improvement in artery wall elasticity, which reduces heart disease triggers such as
inflammation, high blood pressure, clotting of blood and an irregular heartbeat. Significantly, fish oils have also been tied to the amelioration or prevention of
various forms of cancer including breast cancer, prostate cancer and colon
cancer.
As a result, fish oil consumption is a good thing and can lead to
a healthier (and longer) life. Unfortunately, water pollution (both fresh water pollution and ocean
pollution) is becoming more and more prevalent and threatening the health of the fish eating population. As
such, many species of fish are now on the "do not consume" list as they contain unacceptable levels of
contaminants such as mercury.
Accordingly, if you live in an
area where fresh (non-contaminated) fish is not readily available to meet your DHA and EPA requirements, the
health benefits of fish oil can also be achieved if you buy fish oil
supplements. Keep in mind, however, that the
same considerations apply when searching for quality fish oil supplements as you would in selecting fish for your family's
dinner. Only buy pharmaceutical grade fish oil
(molecularly distilled). If you buy the best fish oil pills, you
can avoid those containing contaminants and oxidation products.
