Norwegian Fish Oil
Supplements
Norwegian Fish Oil, made by Nordic Naturals, is a world
leader in the production of high quality fish oil products. Adhering to, and exceeding, governmental standards
that do not even exist in the United States (i.e., Norwegian Medicinal Standard (NMS) and the European
Pharmacopoeia Standard (EPS)), as well as the voluntary standards set by the Council for Responsible Nutrition
(CRN) and the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3 (GOED), Nordic Naturals is simply the best choice for
those concerned about fish oil contamination from peroxides, heavy metals, dioxins, and
PCBs.
During the 1970s, researchers
looking into the health benefits of
fish oil, happened upon a population of Eskimos in the country of Greenland that confirmed
earlier thoughts from the 1930s that consumption of fish oil had positive effects on both growth and
development. This group of Greenland Eskimos had literally no instances of cardiovascular disease, despite the
fact that their diets consisted of high levels of fat from the seafood they ate.
The consuming public is very
fortunate that this research has been conducted and that the health benefits of fish oil are becoming more
accepted. The Food and Drug Administration (the “FDA”), who does not regulate fish oil products (i.e., fish oil
is categorized, not as a drug but, instead, as a nutritional supplement), issued a qualified health claim in
2004 asserting that “supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA [n-3] fatty
acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.” As a result, more and more family doctors and physicians
have started recommending fish oil supplements to their patients.
The fact that fish oil contains
certain omega-3 fatty acids that our bodies cannot independently manufacture is a key explanation of fish oil
nutrition. These specific omega-3 fatty acids, also referred to as docosahexaenoic acid (“DHA”) and
eicosapentaenoic acid (“EPA”), are essential to our overall growth, health, and development. Fortunately, there
are many species of fish that have been regarded as the best natural source of accumulating these omega threes
in our diets.
Certain species of fish get
their omega 3 fatty acids from eating organisms known as microalgae. Other species of fish, such as predatory
fish, accumulate their omega 3s by consuming the fish that eat the microalgae. Either way, like human beings,
there are no species of fish that can produce the omega-3s themselves and must consume them in their
diets.
